Wisdom teeth can be a source of anxiety and uncertainty for many patients. These late-developing molars do not have to be a mystery — or a problem. After evaluating, monitoring, and when necessary, removing wisdom teeth with comfort and care, the trouble caused by wisdom teeth can be solved.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop, typically emerging between ages 17-25. Historically, these extra molars helped our ancestors chew tough, uncooked foods. Today, with modern diets and dental care, most people’s jaws don’t have adequate room for these four additional teeth.
The Four Types of Wisdom Tooth Presentation:
1. Fully Erupted: Teeth that emerge completely and align properly with opposing teeth
2. Partially Erupted: Teeth that only partially break through the gums
3. Impacted: Teeth trapped beneath gum tissue or bone
4. Unerupted: Teeth that remain completely within the jaw
Why Wisdom Teeth Often Need Removal
Common Problems Caused by Wisdom Teeth:
· Crowding: Can shift adjacent teeth, undoing years of orthodontic treatment
· Impaction: Teeth trapped at an angle can damage neighbouring tooth roots
· Pericoronitis: Infection around partially erupted teeth causing pain and swelling
· Cysts/Tumors: Rare but serious developments around impacted teeth
· Decay: Difficult-to-clean areas lead to cavities in wisdom teeth or adjacent teeth
· Gum Disease: Creates pockets where bacteria accumulate, affecting overall oral health
Benefits of Proactive Removal:
· Prevention: Address issues before they cause pain or complications
· Easier Recovery: Younger patients typically heal faster with fewer complications
· Preserved Outcomes: Protect your orthodontic investment and dental work
· Long-Term Oral Health: Eliminate hard-to-clean areas vulnerable to decay and infection

Step 1: Comprehensive Assessment
· Digital X-rays/Panoramic Imaging to view tooth position, roots, and relationship to nerves
· Clinical Examination of your mouth and gums
· Discussion of any symptoms or concerns
Step 2: personalised Recommendation
We will explain our findings and recommend one of three approaches:
1. Monitor: For properly erupted, cleanable, problem-free wisdom teeth
2. Remove Soon: For developing issues or preventive reasons
3. Remove Now: For existing problems causing pain or damageFor patients with severe dental phobia or cases that present with high risk of complications
Step 3: Detailed Consultation
If removal is recommended, we will discuss:
· Anesthesia options (local, sedation, or general anesthesia). However, most removal can be done under local anesthesia which is the most economical option with the least amount of risk and side effects.
· The specific procedure for your case. Sometimes coronectomy may be a more suitable procedure which involves removing the crown of the wisdom tooth and leaving the root.
· Recovery expectations and timeline

Q: Is wisdom teeth removal always necessary?
No. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, properly positioned, cleanable, and disease-free, they may not require removal. We recommend regular monitoring in these cases.
Q: What’s the best age for removal?
Late teens to early twenties is often ideal, as roots are not fully formed and bone is more flexible, typically leading to easier surgery and quicker recovery.
Q: How painful is the recovery?
Most patients describe it as discomfort rather than pain, manageable with prescribed medications. The first 2-3 days are most noticeable, with significant improvement each day after.
Q: Will removal change my face shape?
No. Wisdom teeth removal does not affect the structural support of your face. Any temporary swelling may create this illusion, but it resolves as you heal.
Q: How long until I can return to work/school?
Most patients return to non-strenuous work or school within 2-3 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for about a week.
Q: Are there risks to the procedure?
As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including but not limited to dry socket, infection, or temporary nerve sensation changes. We take every precaution to minimize these and provide clear instructions to reduce your risks.
